eMEDIATOR: RelStat 2023 Workshop

On October 19, 2023, a seminar on the preliminary results of the ERASMUS+ eMEDIATOR project was held at the Institute of Transport and Communications. This project workshop was organized within the framework of the annual international scientific conference RelStat2023. The project is implemented by a consortium of five universities from Latvia (TSI, Riga), Spain (UMU, Murcia), Greece (UoI, Arta), Poland (LU, Lodz) and Germany (AU, Aalen). The moderators of the meeting were prof. Boriss Misnevs and prof. Igors Kabashkins (Latvia). During the seminar, models of the proposed digital mobile education platform developed within the project were presented and discussed. Of particular interest was the presentation of the DEMO portal, which demonstrated the main functions of the proposed educational ecosystem. The results obtained during the discussions were highly appreciated and it was recommended to continue research in this direction. It was proposed to focus on the use of artificial intelligence as a promising tool for the transformation of higher education.

eMEDIATOR: M6 Project Meeting and Training Event in Aalen (Germany)

In the period from October 11 to 14, 2023, two important events of the eMEDIATOR project took place in the city of Aalen in Germany – the final meeting of the project and a training event. Based on the results of the development of models and demo versions of the digital mobile education portal, reports and demonstrations were created. The presented materials gave the participants of the event the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the potential possibilities of the proposed solution and evaluate the prospects of its use for universities. Students of Aalen University also participated in the evaluation of the proposed solutions.

The meeting in Aalen expanded the circle of cooperation between the project participants and provided an opportunity to take into account new important requirements for the digital platform of mobile education. The participants of this meeting also got acquainted with the organization of the educational process of Aalen University and discussed with the representatives of the university’s management the possibilities of future cooperation within the framework of the ERASMUS+ program.

Use RBF as a Sampling Method in Multistart Global Optimization Method

In this paper, a new sampling technique is proposed that can be used in the Multistart global optimization technique as well as techniques based on it. The new method takes a limited number of samples from the objective function and then uses them to train an Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural network. Subsequently, several samples were taken from the artificial neural network this time, and those with the smallest network value in them are used in the global optimization method. The proposed technique was applied to a wide range of objective functions from the relevant literature and the results were extremely promising.

PLANET4 Greek team in BEYOND 2022 international exhibition

The Laboratory of Knowledge and Intelligent Computing, University of Ioannina, was represented by Prof. Chrysostomos Stylios, Lamprini Pappa, and George Pachoulas in the International Exhibition BEYOND 2022 that took place in Thessaloniki from the 29th of September to the 1st of October. 

During the 3-day exhibition, our team had the opportunity to disseminate the so far results of the PLANET4 project to several stakeholders and any individual interested in Industry 4.0 technologies. High-tech companies from Greece and all over the world visited our booth and were informed about the implementation steps of our project and the innovativeness it brings about. 

Companies operating in the field of robotics and automation were especially keen to learn about the project’s outcomes regarding the suggested interventions and the necessary updates in academic curricula.

Our team is looking forward to participating in more events to communicate our project to broad audiences.

VIRTUAL REALITY AS A KEY TOOL FOR ONLINE TRAINING IN ROBOTICS

The Laboratory of Knowledge and Intelligent Computing of the Department of Informatics & Telecommunications of the University of Ioannina organized on Friday, June 17, 2022 at the Library of the University Campus in Arta, an Information Day-Multiplier Event on the results of the European Project JANUS – e-Pedagogy Based, Robotic Education, which is implemented under the Erasmus+ Program. The event was also broadcast live giving the opportunity to those interested to participate without physical presence.

The conference was opened by the Director of the Laboratory and scientifically responsible for the project, Prof. Chrysostomos Stylios, who presented the results of the project, emphasizing the importance of Virtual Reality in online training in robotics, highlighting its key features.

The members of the Laboratory team presented the Virtual Reality platform created during the project, based on existing principles and learning theories as well as educational techniques. The Virtual Reality platform, which can be used in a Mixed Learning Environment, has a secure virtual environment in which students can interact with learning content and engage in a variety of tasks.

During the event, the modern technological developments in the field of Virtual Reality and its practical applications in a wide range of thematic areas, with emphasis on the field of Robotics, were also presented.

In addition, postgraduate students of the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications presented augmented reality applications that they developed and the meeting ended with a discussion between experts and students, where students were given the opportunity to discuss further improvements in their applications.
